Introduction
Inhibitor Solution
Inhibitor Solution for Reinforcement Bar as per CSIR-CECRI Karaikudi,Indian Patent No. 109784/67 & IS:9077
Corrosion in reinforced concrete structures is the major cause of premature failure of infrastructures like flyover, concrete bridges, buildings Industrial & Marine Structures etc. The most prevalent deterioration mechanism of reinforcement corrosion involves contact of steel with depassivating anions such as Chloride & Sulfate or the reduction of pH in concrete as a result of carbonation of the cement binder.
The crucial characteristic of corrosion mechanism is that hydrated iron oxide compounds formed due to corrosion occupy greater volume than original reactants (metallic iron).
As the volume of accumulated corrosion product increases, pressure is generated within the concrete, which may exceed the tensile capacity of concrete and result in cracking, delaminating and spalling.
Reinforcement rod get rusted at site or during storage before they laid in concrete. The salt present in the rust continue the rusting process inside the concrete. In marine atmospheres, corrosive salts enter into pores of the concrete and bring about accelerated rusting of reinforcements leading to premature failure of structures. Under such conditions it is necessary to give a protective coating to steel reinforcement before they laid in concrete. There are several well known system to protect steel but are time taking and expensive also, there seems to be another coating system based on Inhibited Cement Slurry which is comparatively cheaper, easy to use and more effective.
Inhibitor Solution - Inhibited Cement Slurry Coating
Keeping both economy and efficiency in view Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI) Karaikudi, India has developed a coating based on Portland Cement Slurry admixture with Corrosion Inhibitor called Inhibitor Solution - Inhibited cement Slurry Coatings having Indian Patent No: 109784/67 and also having BIS code IS:9077. .
